Jan 25, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court has issued an arrest warrant ordering the police to immediately arrest the extremist Buddhist monk, Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera, General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena organization.
Homagama Chief Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake ordered the Police to arrest the controversial monk and produce him in court for making statements in contempt of court.
The Thera is charged over statements he made during a court hearing today when the habeas corpus case with regard to the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda was heard in the Homagama Magistrate court.
Gnanasara Thera addressing the court has reportedly alleged that arresting the Army officers over Ekneligoda’s disappearance was illegal and the prosecution should be arrested for “illegal arrests” of military officers.
The counsel representing the missing journalist’s family informed the court that the monk threatened the journalist’s wife Sandhya Ekneligoda.
The Magistrate observed that Gnanasara Thera had obstructed the duties of state officials by threatening them and after considering monk’s statements and the lawyers’ requests ordered the arrest of the monk.
