Cabinet Subcommittee on Religious Harmony to take immediate measures to diffuse tension in the country

The Cabinet subcommittee on Religious Harmony appointed by Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa met yesterday afternoon and decided to take steps to immediately diffuse tension that is emerging gradually on a threatening proportion to bring about religious disharmony an disturbances in the country.

Yesterday, the first committee meeting of the Cabinet subcommittee on Religious Harmony met in the Parliament Committee Room No.8.

The meeting was chaired by Senior Minister Ratnasri Wickramanayake.

It is learnt that the Cabinet subcommittee studied problems regarding the campaign that is being carried out virulently by Bodu Bala Sena about the halal foods and halal foods branding and also of the reaction by the Muslim groups.

It is learnt that tension is emerging gradually, as two opposing religious groups are bracing dangerously to create chaos, mayhem and disturbances in the country.

Asian Tribune contacted a few members of the Cabinet subcommittee and they told that the Cabinet subcommittee when it met yesterday for the first time, they went through the complicated issues connected with the labeling of halal foods and various other issues connected with that.

The subcommittee also has decided to summon on 21st February, the opposing religious groups – Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) and All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) , who are involved in certifying halal foods.

It was decided to diffuse the situation immediately by coming up with some compromise solution and stop the campaign against each other’s religion and to ensure that things will not go out of control and harmony in the midst of both the religious community remains.

The Sub Committee has decided call the opposing parties for talks separately.

It is learnt that the cabinet subcommittee also suspected that there are some small fundamentalist groups on either side and they are trying secretly promoting campaigns against each other to inflame the situation and bring about disturbance and tension in the country.

Also Asian Tribune learnt of some Cabinet subcommittee members also spoke of some foreign hands behind all these anti- religious campaigns.

Asian Tribune learnt all the party leaders in the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Government were represented in the Cabinet sub committee on Religious Harmony.

On the 14th of April, after the Cabinet meeting, Ministers A.L.M.Athaula, Rishad Bathudeen, Vasudevan Nanayakkara, Dinesh Gunawaedene, Rauff Hakeem and A.H.M.Fowzie met President Mahinda Rajapaks and brought to his notice about the threats on religious harmony gradually emerging in the country.

After a discussion on the subject, President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed a Cabinet Sub-Committee on Religious Harmony.

The committee consists of all the constituent party leaders of the ruling UPFA – Ministers Ratnasri Wickramanayake, Rishad Bathudeen, Douglas Devananda, Vasudeva Nanayakara, D.E.W Gunasekera, Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Dinesh Gunawardene, A.H.M.Fowzie, A.L.M.Athaula, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Rauff Hakeem Wimal Weerawansa, and Basil Rajapaksa.

Senior Minister Ratnasri Wicjramanayake is the chairman of the Cabinet subcommittee.
